Overview of this website:
Hello there! Welcome to my website! If your curiosity brought you here that means you may be interested in learning more about medical anthropology and cultural diversity. Ever wonder how people gain true information about different cultures? You have came to the right site to learn!
This site is composed of an introduction to What is Medical Anthropology, followed by more in depth understanding of what Critical Medical Anthropology and Applied Medical Anthropology is and how it connects with Cultural Competency. A video clip is presented to help depict cultural differences and obstacles presented in the healthcare system, along with viewing the importance to accept and work with cultural beliefs for a patient's well-being and health.
In addition to learning the basics, there is a section with a fabulous true story about a little Hmong girl, named Lia Lee, discussed by summarizing a book about her life entitled The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. You will read about her struggles from her sickness in life, the cultural barriers present between her culture and her American doctors, and learn about the Hmong culture. While reading about Lia Lee it may help open your eyes to the way of a culture you may not know much about. You may correlate her story with your learning of medical anthropology and understand how using it could have helped her, her family, and the American doctors.
If further interests arise after learning about medical anthropology there is a section to learn about pursuing this as a career or further learning.
ENJOY!
